We just celebrated our third anniversary in our home. It seems like yesterday, I went to the open house for my home with my mom. The street that my home is on was established in the early 1800’s so every home is different and full of character. We were looking for homes at the time so this open house was so much fun to walk through. The screened-in porch was the last room on the tour, it was the room that made me fall in love with this house. I was just dreaming because this home was out of our price range…
Well, guess what? I will share the short version of the story with you. My husband surprised me and bought it! I remember the day like it was yesterday, we had just arrived in Maine for a week’s summer vacation with our family and close friends. I could not have been happier just to be away. When we unloaded the car, I walked into our tiny vacation bedroom and was ready to get my sun gear out and head to the beach. I saw a big envelope on the bed and it was the purchase and sale for this house!! Even my kids and friends knew the story, so I was so surprised! As a family we had been through a terrible break in at our house, so we were all wanting to move! My friends who know my husband know he is a great guy, but this, this was just amazing!!!
I will never forget that vacation, sitting on the beach just in awe of what my husband had just done, and to be honest, I was looking forward to getting home to go look at our new home!
This home represents healing for our family and we all look at it as a blessing. The sellers knew our story and came down on the price and accepted our offer. They had lived here for 30 years, and it made them feel at peace leaving it to another family with children that would love and care for it like they did.
The house was beautiful as-is, but of course we wanted to add our own touches to it, so we have slowly each season tackled one room at a time. Some rooms just got paint, some rooms were moved entirely as well as adding on a few rooms in the attic…
Back to my favorite room. The screened-in porch. This was last on our list, because living in NH we don’t get to use the porch for that many days out of the year.
But during the late spring, summer and part of the fall when we can use this room, if you are looking for me and I am home, no need to ring the bell, just go to the porch door and that is where you will find me.
I have a few before pictures for you. It wasn’t horrible actually, I liked it, but it was just too dark.
After: We painted the ceiling and the walls white! We are working on painting the exterior of our house so we bought a paint sprayer! It is a God Send!! seriously saves hours! 😉
we added white lights to the ceiling instead of the paper ball lights
After for the summer:
After: For the fall, I found this free printable and the frame is from the dollar store! Adding mums are a perfect transition to fall decor on the porch.
Before: The mantel
After: the mantel for summer
after: the mantel for fall
before: This gorgeous antique was found in Portsmouth, NH at an antique barn. I just love it.
Isn’t this piece amazing?
For the summer, I added these bud vases. You can see that DIY here. For the fall, I added mums!
This small nook in the porch, was basically a catch all, and we put a small table here, but that defeated the reason to eat on the porch, 2 people were just staring at the dark walls.
After: The white paint totally brightened up this nook. It now is the perfect spot for my vintage trunk from my sister-in-law. I decided to leave some elements of summer mixed with fall on my porch! I love coastal decor. I put away shells and starfish from the inside, but I keep them on the porch, and one of my bathrooms actually!
before: This photo shows my Pottery Barn bench before I revived it. This photo also shows the dirty floor. No matter how I cleaned it it just wouldn’t get clean. It was also a dark mustard yellow , that didn’t quite go.
We painted the floor a light gray color and isn’t it amazing what white paint can do! Not only does it brighten a room, but it also revived this Pottery Barn bench!
And that ottoman needed some love and I show you how to cover an ottoman without sewing here too!
I hope you liked this before and after room & all the projects in it! If you did and would like to share the love feel free to grab the pin below and pin it to pinterest!
