As far back as I can remember my mom has been making these candy cane reindeer. I remember when I taught fourth grade my mom would make them for all of my students every year at Christmas. Then when I had my own kids she would make them for them. My 16 year old daughter still looks forward to going to my mom’s house every year and baking Christmas cookies and making candy cane reindeer!
- candy canes
- craft eyes
- red & green pipe cleaners
- tiny pom-poms ( my mom always uses red ones, but Michael’s didn’t have any so I went with white)
- hot glue gun
First, twist the pipe cleaner around the candy can super-duper tight so it doesn’t move. Then accordion fold the pipe cleaners for the antlers.
put a dab of glue on the candy cane where the eyes should go and press the eyes on the candy cane and repeat for the nose!
So this goes without saying, but just incase, if you are working on this craft with very small children, monitor the glue gun use, or simply add the glue to the candy cane for them.
Aren’t they adorable? (my daughter, Annika & her friend Abby made these after school, they wouldn’t let me show their faces…if you have teens you know that whenever you take pics someone in the family says, “mom, don’t post that!”)
You can decorate your tree with them. When my kids were little starting on December 15 they got to get a candy cane off of the tree each night after dinner.
They would make great gifts for your children’s friends too for that end of the year Christmas party.
If you are looking for more holiday crafts to do with your children, check out this post from last year that my daughter wrote!
