Christmas is my favorite holiday. My favorite memories growing up all had to do with Christmas. My dad was always singing “Happy Holidays” and my mom was always baking up a storm and dancing in the kitchen while my dad sang. I kid you not this actually happened, actually they are still like this around the holidays.
My husband, 3 children and I live 5 miles from my parents and we stay over on Christmas Eve! It is such a fun tradition and I love that my own kids can experience the same joy that my brother and I did growing up. One Christmas when they got a little older we decided to have my parents at our house, but my kids didn’t like it at all so even at 18, 16 and 14 years old they all still want to sleep at Grammy and Papa’s house.
Our Christmas morning always starts with the true Christmas story from the Bible. My dad always reads it to all of us while we eat our breakfast in their bedroom! He reads about the birth of Jesus. Then we sit on the stairs for a family picture and then rush into the family room to see what is under the tree!
We did Santa when my kids were little, but we always made a much bigger deal about it being Jesus’ birthday. Nativity scenes are always a big part of my Christmas decor.
This Nativity scene is from Ever Thine Home. I love rustic touches in my home decor so this is just perfect. It came with a backdrop too. It talks all about who Jesus is. I just love it. You can find it here.
This Nativity set stays in this cabinet in my dining room all year long! I love the little reminder of Jesus during all of the holidays.
Every year as a family we go to a local tree farm and cut one down. It is always a fun family day. This year we started out with some new ornaments they are all the royal names of Jesus. Engraved in silver glitter and a velvet purple string to hang on the tree. Our most elegant ornaments on the tree. You can find them here. I also love this ribbon, also from Ever Thine Home. You can see more decorating ideas for it here.
I have a box with each of my kids names on them and they are filled with all of their own decorations. These are my favorite ornaments. I love looking at their cute crafts from preschool. It’s not the prettiest tree, but it is a family tree. The kids decorate it and can put their ornaments wherever they want. Some day I would love to have two trees. One of them will be for beauty and one of them will hold all of our family traditions.
One of my favorite Christmas traditions is sending and receiving Christmas cards. I especially love picture cards. Even though we have Instagram and Facebook and we keep up with our family and friends from afar, there is still something about getting a Christmas card. I guess it is the anticipation of receiving the cards. I don’t really ever think about mail or want to get the mail; it usually stays in the mailbox until my husband comes home, but during Christmas I am all about getting the mail. It’s like a little gift each time I open a card. I leave them up all through January. Before we had a stainless steel refrigerator we hung them on the fridge, but now we hang them on door ways. I was so happy to receive this chain garland from Ever Thine Home! I love how it can be used for my Christmas cards, but I was also thinking it will be fun to use on Valentine’s Day, and just to hang fun pictures during different seasons. I was also thinking this chain garland would be perfect to hang all the art work we as moms get when our kids are little! You can find this chain garland here .
Thank you so much for peeking in at some of our family traditions. I’d love to hear what some of yours are!
